Mord, Necrosodomic Abyss

What do you get with a couple of Polish black metallers (Nordra on guitars and vocals, Necrolucas on drums) based out of Norway? You get the two man powerhouse of Mord. With Necrosodomic Abyss the duo have unleashed a raging beast of an album. Relentless drums and a little groove in the background combine with shrieking vocals for a constant assault on your every sense.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, the saving grace for Nordra’s brain child is the crushing rhythms of drummer Necrolucas. Sure Nordra has capable riffing and catchy hooks, but his band mate’s effort simply put his own to shame. The drums on this album will bury you alive under insanely quick and powerful blasts — some of which will leave you breathless.

Opus I
The opening riff to the first track on Necrosodomic Abyss is pretty damned catchy, but you better enjoy it while it lasts — Mord erupt in unholy fury with a huge scream and pummeling drums shortly after the track starts off. Nordra has some decent riffing throughout this song and his midrange screams and growls are full of spite and hatred. Drummer Necrolucas is a death machine fueled b rapid fire blast beats and crushing rhythms.

Opus II
Another catchy bit of guitar starts off this next track, before mid-tempo drums and screams ingest it in a single swallow. Nordra’s delivery on this one is a bit deeper though still in the higher range of growls and screams. I’ll tell you what, man. Necrolucas’ heavy drumming is overwhelming. His blasts are brutal and nearly drown out the rest of the music.

Opus III
I think at this point in the recording, the duo may have realized that the drumming on the album was the highlight. It definitely feels much more powerful and out in the open on this track — starting right from the opening fury of blasts. In Nordra’s defense the guitar work on this one is a bit more creative than the previous tracks.

Opus IV
Another beefy blast of drums and caustic guitar start “Opus IV” as the screamed vocals come in. The :44 mark sees some creative guitar tones before the duo descend into a whirling bit of pummeling madness once again. Aside from the adequate guitar work on this album my only other complaint would be the song titles. I mean, how hard can it be to actually name your music. This track is actually one of the stronger on the album.

Opus V
Song #5 starts out with some larger riffs before falling into the pummeling drum/screams pattern we’ve seen thus far on Necrosodomic Abyss. At least Nordra is getting a bit more creative with his guitar work on this one. His vocals also sound a bit more pissed off, as well. The pace slow down at the 1:20 mark is a nice touch.

Opus VI
A mixture of tortured screams and churning guitars make for a chaotic entrance to “Opus VI.” Whirling riffs work well with the crushing rhythms produced by Necrolucas. This one is by far the most aggressive track on the album. The vocals have that much more vehemence to them. The guitar has a much needed urgency to it as Nordra tears through riff after riff. There’s a decent groove starting at the two minute mark that lasts a good bit before disappearing under a crushing wall of drumming destruction.

Opus VII
A huge scream and powerful blasts open up this next track as the band shreds through the opening few seconds. There’s a few nicely timed tempo changes throughout this one that’ll keep you busy on the listening end.

Opus VIII
The final track on Necrosodomic Abyss starts off with a fairly memorable riff and heavy drumming. There’s some nice grooves just before the three minute mark that’ll have your head bouncing along nicely.

Necrosodomic Abyss is a prime example how one band member can really make a somewhat mediocre release something to look forward to. Drummer Necrolucas is an unconstrained beast with his weapon of choice, leveling stereos with pummeling rhythms, blinding double bass blasts and crushing fills. The dude really makes this release one to keep an eye out for. Aside from the demonic fires of Necrolucas, Mord fulfill most of your black metal lust with a raw, pile driving album full of evil riffing and beats.
