Impiety, Dominator

I’ve used the word “unrelenting” in many reviews to describe the driving blasts of drums or the overall feel of an album. Impiety’s latest EP Dominator makes that word seem far too inferior and too weak of an adjective to use in this review, but I’ll be damed if their barbarian horde is going to stop me from employing it to describe the beastly pace and ferocious rhythms of this disc.

Combing black metal, thrash and death metal into a full on aural pillaging, this Singapore outfit will leave you a husk of your former self after a few spins of Dominator. The five tracks transcend the normal realm of aggressive music with a raw, uncompromising blitz of pummeling rhythms, driving guitars and rabid vocals. As soon as the disc starts you’re swarmed by a blur of blackened riffs, blistering leads and cranium crushing blasts. You’ve been warned.

Introbliteration
Symphonic noise, hellish hoof beats and the sounds of battle fill the first 40 seconds before manic drums fade in from the background. This intro is quick and let’s you know that these dudes mean serious business.

Slaughterror Superiority
“Slaughterror Superiority” fades in smoothly from the opening introduction with a massive growl and hellish guitars. The layered vocals throughout this one are full of demonic fury as they spit their lyrics with a malevolent rage. The pace only proves to get faster and faster as the song progresses, only taking a few moments here and there to reset and attack again. I love the guitars at the three minute mark.

Dominator
The EP’s title track takes off like a bullet with more impossibly fast, maniacal drum work and blackened riffing. The vocalist has no fear of shredding his own throat in spewing his blasphemous lyrics. This dude just won’t take a break. The slow down around the 1:30 point and the following vocal delivery kick serious ass. I’m still amazed by the drummer and I’ve listened to this disc countless times — he’s like an F5 tornado of activity on the kit. There’s a pretty slick, evil lead around 2:30 that let’s the drummer take a momentary breathe before descending into light speed drumming once again. This one also has a catchy chorus.

The Black Vomit
Covering Brazil’s Sarcofago with this barbaric rendition of “The Black Vomit,” Impiety take no prisoners in their rapid descent upon your weary soul. This is a monster track with thundering drums, blood boiling leads and caustic vocals. It’s over before you know it after just two minutes.

At War With Temujin
The final track is no less raw than the previous tracks, but the several tempo changes throughout make it a standout on the EP. Thrash fueled riffing sometimes almost gets drown out at times by the spastic drumming, but still works perfectly in this setting. I see why this album only has five tracks on it. The drummer needed to take a couple of months off to recover form this beastly onslaught.

I had never heard any of Impiety’s earlier work, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to miss any of their future releases. The tracks on this EP are some of the more aggressive and ferocious songs I’ve heard all year. If you’re looking to have your ass handed to you in just over 15 minutes time, Impeity’s Dominator is just the disc to do it.
