Donnybrook, Lions in this Game

Donnybrook is a west coast band with a pretty east coast sound. There is nothing revolutionary about the album, but it is a great. Much of the earlier Donnybrook demo stuff was performed with a second vocalist. I can imagine this album sounding much different than it currently does.

The loss of the second singer doesn’t really take away from the impact of the tracks on the final release. Dre Stewart has no issue holding his own as the sole vocalist on Lions in this Game. Each word is sung/shouted strongly and with plenty of aggression.

Smash through the filth with this iron fist

It’s no frills hardcore with a great groove and flow to the overall sound of the album. The lyrics are pretty straight forward and sometimes come across in typical tough guy fashion, which, honestly, you should expect from an album titled Lions of this Game. And speaking of lions, I think we could have done without the cheesy lion roar sound byte in the opening track. It really adds nothing to the track and certainly doesn’t fit.

Other than that lion roar, there really isn’t anything to complain about with this release. Plenty of aggression, gang choruses, and more.
