Blood Red Throne, Come Death

There’s nothing like brutal, straight forward death metal to bring a sadistic smile to any metal head’s face. Norway’s Blood Red Throne are sure to be the source for many maniacal grins with their latest release, Come Death.

Groove oriented, bludgeoning guitars mix with drumming vicious enough to cause even Gil Grisholm (TV’s CSI: Las Vegas) to stop in his tracks at a crime scene. Each of the nine tracks on this album consist of precision riffs combined with an old school death metal underlying groove.

For as simple as this music comes across at times, there is more than meets the eye lying deep within the depths of Blood Red Throne’s concentrated aggression. There’s plenty of groove to keep your head banging along with catchy riffs and intense soloing. Take that flow and throw in some insanely devastating drums and you’ve got classic death metal heaviness not heard in many albums this year.

Quite simply, be prepared for an ass whoopin’ like no other when you hit that play button.

Slaying the Lamb
Blood Red Throne open up the album with a great groove fueled bit of drumming with memorable riffs before erupting into a burst of vicious blasts and guttural vocals. The flow of this song is catchy as hell and will have you head banging maniacally with the band. There’s an interesting use of shouted vocals through a slight bit of vocalization that helps mute it followed by a soring solo. The song ends in a violent cacophony of screams and chugging riffs

Deranged Assassin
“Deranged Assassin” starts off with some slick bass work dominating the first few seconds as thundering drums take over with Vald’s vocals. The main riff on this one is pretty damned catchy. This track is aggressive as hell with drums that just won’t quit.

Rebirth in Blood
I just can’t get enough of the opening riffs and guttural delivery of the first few seconds of this track — classic, bludgeoning death metal at its best. You’ll find some of the faster paced material on this one as well. Vald showcases his vocal range well by hitting higher end screams in addition to his default guttural growls.

Guttural Screams
Speaking of guttural vocals, this one aptly titled is straight from the belly of the beast. The opening riffs and drumming are quite memorable. Damn, I’m sure to have a sprained neck after this album is complete. Four songs in and the cranial pummeling has yet to let up in its ferocity. Several tempo shifts will keep you fully entertained on this one.

Taste of God
I’m not entirely sure I’d want a taste of God. Knowing my luck it would I’d end up gnawing on a toe knuckle or a sizable piece of rancid taint. At any rate, Blood Red Throne seem to think that he’d be best with a nice Chianti. In all seriousness this is the most evil and unrelenting track on the disc. It’s beyond brutal in every facet and will easily be a fan favorite.

No New Beginning
This next track fades in quickly with a thick, memorable riff as Vald belches forth his vocals. It’s a more mid tempo song with periodic bursts from the drums and guitars. There’s also some really nice technical guitar work throughout this song.

Come Death
The title track opens like an exploding rib cage — bits of gristle and flesh splatter everywhere. Thick riffing and crunchy bass dominate “Come Death.’ There’s actually a slight bit of melody hiding among the brutal riffs and pummeling drums.

Disincarnated
With a song straight out of the death metal history book (a cover of Goreguts nonetheless), Blood Red Throne unleash a contusion inducing attack as this next song opens. Vald’s screams accompany a driving pace and sick soloing.

Another Kill
The final track on the album is just as devastating as the opening song. It opens with a good bit of riffing chaos before shifting into high gear with more skull crunching drums and guitars. There’s a nice bit of backing/dual vocals that you don’t get to hear on the rest of the album. Don’t forget the sick ass lead about half way through the track.

What can you say about a band from Norway that’s producing some of the sickest death metal with a sound straight out primal swamps of Florida? Blood Red Throne have delivered upon the unsuspecting public and album with such a brutal ferocity that it’s almost too much for some folks to handle. Simply enough, get this album as quickly as you can.
