Plague Angel, Raped By Lies

Formed in 2005 during one of Sweden’s abysmal winters, Plague Angel formed hell bent on playing no frills, straight forward death metal. Drawing their influences from both the European and American metal scenes, the group have honed their skills and molded own style over the the last couple of years. Using thick, sludgy guitar tones in combination with steamrolling rhythms, the band unleashes Raped by Lies upon the globe.

Built upon that fortified death metal back bone, this four song EP showcases the band’s propensity for destructive death metal for a solid 10 minutes. Combining their musical base with deep guttural vocals, Plague Angel also have an underlying groove to their music that is catchy and should certainly garner them their fair share of notice.

The Dawning
The opening track starts with sirens and a catchy, chugging riff. You’re about to take a drubbing from the drums as the vocals kick in. The drums are a steady assault on the skull with rapid firing bursts thrown in here and there. The vocals are deep and guttural yet fairly understandable. So far so good, as Plague Angle crunch their way through crumple bodies with this groove filled song. The track fades just before reaching three minutes in length.

Deviants of Humanity
“Deviants of Humanity” starts off with a nice riff and shifts speeds quickly as rapid fire drums erupt from the speakers. Vocalist Jorgen Jern showcases some range with some higher pitched screams to accompany his main guttural delivery. There’s still more groove flowing through one as well as a great cadence to the vocals. The 1:45 mark sees the band jump into hyper sonic speed right before the track ends shortly after two minutes.

Raped by Lies
The title track starts off with heavy handed drumming as Jern’s vocals come in. The main riff for this one is pretty sick and moves along nicely through several tempo changes. I’m impressed by the cohesive sound that the band has on this EP. They definitely sound like they’ve been playing together for a few years. The drums are a stand out on this song.

Broken
The final song on the EP starts with a fairly memorable bit of riffing as the drums kick into gear (high gear) again. There’s a sick wavering feel to the riffs as the song develops that adds a little extra evil to the song. Again, for straight forward death metal these guys know how to carry the flow, creating addictive head banging grooves.

~ ~ ~

Plague Angel use crushing and suffocating riffs together with pile driving rhythms in an effort to raze the competition. Combining elements of European and American death metal, this Swedish four piece have brought together the best of both worlds into one hell of a debut.
