Hod, Cry and Piss Yourself

With a title like Cry and Piss Yourself I would have expected something a little more comical in nature. Instead, Hod let loose with raw, caustic black metal full of vehemence and spite. Hod features a few dudes from Necrovore, Thornspawn, Exulcerate, Pillcrusher and GG Allin.

There’s more hatred and terror in the three tracks on this EP than in many full lengths. There’s a sense of energy to the thrashing metal within this album that dips into the bleak darkness of unrelenting black metal. The vocals are gruff yet understandable. The drum work is aggressive with a primal edge to it — combining nicely timed fills with barbaric blasts. The guitars delivery soul crushing riffs and evil leads with precision.

9 Days
“9 Days” starts off with a quick blst of chaotic drums as some eerie riffing comes in. The drums quickly settle into a series of rabid fire bursts as the coarse vocals join the rest of the band. The vocal delivery is deep and slightly guttural, but easily understood and enjoyable — appropriate for the music on this EP. There’s a nice explosion of pummeling drums and churning guitars at the 2:33 mark right before a quicker delivery of the vocals comes in.

Demoralizer
“Demoralizer” gets off to an aggressive start with some creative guitar and drums before erupting with a steady flow of driving drums and growls. There are a few tempo changes throughout this one that should have you fully entertained. The chorus to this one is evil, yet catchy as hell. There’s a nice, dark lead at the 2:20 mark that will leave you looking over your shoulder in the dark.

God of Darkness and Winter
The longest track on the EP, weighing in at 6:32 in length, “God of Darkness and Winter” starts off dramatically with some memorable guitar work. The chorus on this one is memorable, as well, but not quite as catchy as that found on “Demoralizer.” There’s a nice slow down right before the three minute mark that makes for a great change of pace before a sick lead comes in at 3:25. The track fades slowly to oblivion.

~ ~ ~

For a three song EP, Cry and Piss Yourself is quite a powerful and energetic release from this Texas based band. The material that storms from the speakers is raw, evil and full of hell fire delivered through pummeling drums and icy riffs. I can’t wait to hear more of these dudes.
